Introduction to The Letters of John

The Apostle John wrote the Gospel of John, Revelation and the three letters in this study: 1st, 2nd and 3rd John. He wrote these letters between 85-95 AD, and was an elderly man when he wrote them. They were circulated among a number of churches in the Roman province of Asia.

The early church was being threatened by false teachers who did not believe that God became a man in Jesus Christ, and who claimed to have reached a stage of spirituality where they were beyond “good and evil”. Their teaching was contrary to the Apostles teaching, so they left the church, but their departure left those who remained somewhat unsettled and shaken.

In his first letter, John was writing to reassure the true believers, and to expose the heresy being taught by the false teachers.

The main means by which Christianity spread during the first century was through itinerant missionaries. Since Roman inns were few and far between, and often unsafe, John wrote his second and third letters to encourage believers to open their homes and be hospitable to missionaries who were spreading the Gospel, but to beware of false teachers, and not open their homes to them, lest they participate in spreading heresy.

In the 21st century, like the 1st century, many claim to be born again Christians, but don’t “walk in the light”. John’s letters will help us discern the difference between truth and error and live in a way that pleases and brings glory to God.

I pray this study is a blessing to you!
